And from the article: In the U.S., government agencies have long warned that the combination of higher summer heat and high humidity will become more and more dangerous in places like the midwest as temperatures continue to rise because so-called “wet-bulb” temperatures will prevent the human body from cooling down by sweating.

Prepare for everyone to have thermometers wrapped in wet paper tow.els so they can become experts on the subject.  Wouldn't be surprised to see the Walmarts sell a "Wet-bulb kit".

That and "heat dome" make me twitch. It's annoying having the news latch onto a buzzword and that is all they talk about like it's a new concept.

This is the easiest to take heat wave we may ever get in st.louis mid 90s with heat index within a degree or 2 is honestly a very tolerable temp.

This is likely all anecdotal, BUT, I came out here on "vacation" from CA with my girlfriend/future wife in September of 1980 and that was my first experience with Midwest heat and humidity and The Weather Channel.😁 It was brutal to this thin-blooded Californian. Then driving up Highway 44 somewhere just NW of Springfield, Missouri as we were moving out here in 1988, the radio station said this is the first day it hasn't made it to 90*in,I forget how many days he said, but it was a pretty brutal streak. I think it's still stands or was broken in 2012. But I don't recall the constant barrage from the Mets and how bad it was. Anyway, I landed a job as a welder in 1988 until I retired in 2018 and either working in a shop with no AC or inside a Powerhouse with other units running during hot streaks that probably helped me to get used to it/tolerate it more. I'm sure this Heatwave isn't over yet but I don't think it comes anywhere near the severity/coverage of the 1988 heat-wave, as I lean over and knock on a wood table.🤔🤪

Nastiest heat related work experience. Last hour of the day, 8th graders who are very sweaty. Windows open. Gnats and bugs attacking. And I was supposed to have them singing. It was disgusting but nothing like welding, just gross

I had class last hour in HS on the west side of a 3 story building with no AC.  You wanted to be close to the windows for any chance of a breeze, but you also took full sun.  There really was no good option.

Intriguing forecast from the NWS...my point shows 60% POPs for "heavy rain" but the discussion says this:

The coverage of storms should also gradually wane overnight tonight,
as the surface convergence weakens. The activity should become more
isolated-scattered in nature, leaving most of the area with
little/no beneficial rainfall.

I wonder if the media is trying to create a panic word for wet-bulb in a similar manner that they came up with snowmaggedeon.

In similar circumstances we would always get a wasp or 2 or 3 bouncing around the ceiling and occasionally dive bombing the kids causing the students to scream while the teacher tried to convince everyone that if they leave the wasp alone he'll leave them alone.

Lots of near record flooding in southern MN, southwest SD and northern and western IA. We may not be getting much rain but they sure are. Shouldn't have to be concerned with our major rivers drying up like they were in late winter.

Yeah, the rivers have come down for sure with the dry weather...but they are still pretty full.  We went out to our duck blind in the IL river bottoms and the water was still a little high on the lake and the MS was running fast at the boat races today.

I've been using heat dome for years... or bubble of summer... dome of heat. I might stop now that the national media has latched on to it to hype what has been only a moderately hot and humid pattern. I've been trying to play it down as much as I can emphasizing that we haven't broken any records here and the heat index hasn't even crossed the 100 line moat of the time. Td's have been seasonably acceptable too. The two days I'm most concerned about are Monday and Tuesday. The wind is much more favorable and with a front nearby... pooling of moisture may drive the heat index up over 105 in spots. I think there will be a noticeable difference in the perceived hotness Monday... and especially Tuesday.

As for the new NOAA heat guidance, I'm not a fan. It has definitely been overselling this heat.

One thing that is somewhat impressive has been the # of 80+ days this year. We are up to 51 I believe now and that ties for 3rd most at this point in the year. In addition, the average temperature for the year is aslo at 3rd warmest. So while we have only broken one record high this year... in February... the cumulative impact of above normal, but not record breaking warmth is definitely adding up.

I was surprised when you said we've only broken one record high for the year. And that was in February.

We’ve had to use the “we’re bulb” for atleast the last 7-8 years, as required by your Missouri Athletic governing body. Readings are all over unless it’s in a consistent spot everyday. Some days you couldn’t ask for a better day and it will spout off a high reading, boom, helmets only. But it is what is.

NBM is still saying 100+ on Tuesday. I don't know. Given the non-ideal positioning of the ridge combined with the modeled tongue of higher 850mb temperatures appearing to be a little too far north and enough of a rain chance that it's making me skeptical of cracking the century mark.

Also on Tuesday...some model soundings are showing large dewpoint depressions through deep layers of the atmosphere, high LCL heights, warm temperatures aloft, light unidirectional wind through the whole column, with the potential for isolated elevated thunderstorms. Hmm...

I seriously doubt we crack 100* on Tuesday...the incoming shortwave(s) should throw at least high cloud our way.

I just hope we get some appreciable rainfall soon.
