looks like there is a DAM starting in Sparta, north through Mascoutah, through Edwardsville all the way up to Carlinville.

This is an aircraft sounding at STL from a little over 1.5 hours ago. There was a +2C warm layer between 850mb-925mb. But wetbulb was around 0C. So some of this light precip is probably helping to evaporate out just a bit of the warm layer. Think once heavier precip gets going we probably get a pretty quick transition to snow in the immediate metro especially considering St. Charles airport already reporting snow. I'm hoping...

I have 33.7F in Belleville. Should be snowing in St. Clair county by 8-815PM. Also the HRRR is actually pretty weak along the river and in IL. However real time tracking looks like the HRRR is to far West. Down to 33.4F. Must be a warm layer until 2000 feet. Yeah HRRR doesn't look as good for you, but better for west of the Mississippi. I live in Northern Wildwood and HRRR looks really good for the western counties. As Btrn mentioned though, the short range models are too far west so realistically areas near the river west and east are in a great spot (especially since you are colder and will see much less rain). Though, there will be a very sharp cutoff of snow just east of you. For you it sake hopefully it's near Mt. Vernon ish and not Belleville east. Time to focus on live radar anyway as Btrn said! Radar scope doesn't have a regional or national mosaic radar right?

Note also that's a 7.3C/km lapse rate between -10C and -30C covering the DGZ.

That's a handy tool...thanks, 920. This may be a good opportunity to share my general disgust with government websites. So. Hard. To. Navigate.
Steady light snow and holding at 33*

33F in E'ville, heavy radar returns moving in quick. Love/hate this part. Hopefully we transition quickly if it starts as rain.

Now seems like a good time to remind everyone in the S/W metro that this was always forecast to start out as rain. Luckily, with the cyclone tracking to our SW it will pull in colder air as it digs and change it over fairly quickly into the evening, especially as deeper lift moves in. This thing looks GREAT on satellite and radar...it may very well be the most impressive clipper I've ever seen and this band is going to stall and pivot over the river valley into the Metro well into the overnight hours. ENJOY!
