00z gfs brings a piece of the PV down over the northeast by February 4th.
Things get weird from there with a southern storm running into a virtual shield.
Unstoppable force, meet immovable wall.

Good morning all, kinda of the subject of winter weather but I was curious if you all had rain gauges and what they’re reading so far for the month of January. Mine is reading 4.53” so far. I reset it the first day of January and it’s in an open area where there’s no trees or anything for extra run off. Thank you.

Fairly open area, 15 yards to any tree

In case anyone was anxiously awaiting the next cicada swarm then I have good news for you. Brood 19, the largest brood in Missouri, will swarm once again this year. Yay! I've been seeing claims that two broods will overlap this year. Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I remember there being a lot more cicadas when I was younger. I actually believe that the insect population as a whole has seen a reduction over the years. Grasshoppers in particular seem much more absent than I remember in the past. Yes. For those lucky enough to live in central IL they'll witness a 1-in-221 year event where two broods swarm simultaneously. It's only brood 19 here in St. Louis. This is a 13 year brood. I'm sure many will remember the noisy critters back in 2011.

Like a sickening amount. Perhaps hundreds per adult size tree.

There's a lot less grass now then even 30 years ago as farmers have tiled the fields, mowed waterways, and tilled the fence rows under. It's sad

Late 90's we had 2 overlapping broods...anyone remember the year? It was absolutely deafening around the clock.

I used to follow JB when I was younger, no longer do. As for our weather looks like dense fog and also mist here and there is going to stick around until our third round of rain bubbles up from the SW to the NE after 9am (10-11am in the STL metro tomorrow. There may be some fog that lingers tomorrow afternoon but it should dissipate. It's taking awhile for the ground to warm.

I had looked it up a couple of days ago because when the article said the last time was 221 years ago I thought, my memory is better than I thought. I thought it was 1995 but it looks like it was 1998. I was painting my lap siding off of a 30' extension ladder with a paint brush in one hand and a plastic 5 gallon lid in the other taking turns.....paint a swipe with the right hand, swipe a cicada with the left hand..... I can only assume that the article was referring to that exact spot in IL 221 years ago. I guess the overlap of the 2 Brood's in pretty small. I remember using them as fish bait and my dog loved them. I will try them at the pond this year, if it is not ice covered, or dry.

Hard to thaw the ground with no sun. Even a weak winter sun is better than none.

Yeah I mentioned earlier how I think we could get an overrunning event in the Feb 4th - 8th time range if we are lucky.

It was really something! Being 9 at the time I was pretty fascinated, but I also remember us wishing it would end! I lived out in the country in the woods in a valley, it just echoed through the hills.

Just need the 9th to be good. Mom's kidney cancer decided to make a reappearance 8 years later, and she is getting her kidney removed that day. Send prayers, good thoughts, etc that day, and I just want a 3 day weekend of good weather.

Best of luck Labrat sending prayers and good vibes for your Mom.
Looks like this winter is over unless we can get another arctic shot in mid February. Annoying that we only have about a week or so where it is cold enough for accumulating snowfall.

Didn't you make or were part of the process? I could totally be wrong?? I think it was our Marissa guys.
Pretty sure I took the remaining ones to Goodwill a few months ago.
Online would be the way to do it. I still have contacts that could get it done, but don't have the time to do much else other than send someone the info.
