Taal began erupting this morning at approximately 6:30Z. I've not see any VEI estimates, but the volcano does have a history of several 4's. The satellite loop is really cool though. col.st/Apbvy

Epo with a sudden change to a positive phase by D5-7 before going back down in the longer term which is a shot in the dark. I quit. good ol' near neutral ENSO-- I assume that's what's leading to the flip-floppiness at least.

I was looking at that Taal IR imagery earlier this morning. It's pretty cool...you can see the gravity waves at the top of the ash plume emanating away from the volcano.

How big do volcanic eruptions need to be to have a noticeable effect on global temps? I know major past eruptions have cooled global temps

I don't know the answer, but according to Wikipedia Pinatubo was a VEI 6 and lowered global temps by 0.5C for a couple years back in 1991.

You know how you hear a joke and it’s funny the first 27 times, but then everybody tries telling the joke and it gets not funny?

How big do volcanic eruptions need to be to have a noticeable effect on global temps? I know major past eruptions have cooled global temps Usually VEI 5 or higher. El Chichon in 1982 was a 5 and is thought to have lowered the typical El Nino response to the global mean temperature. As was already mentioned Pinatubo in 1991 was a 6 and it caused about 0.5C of cooling. Krakatoa in 1883 was a larger VEI 6 that cooled the planet by as much 1C. Tambora in 1815 was a VEI 7 and caused the year without a summer. Sulfate aerosols are relatively short lived so the radiative forcing typically wanes within a few years for the smaller 5/6 eruptions.

If anyone has Amazon Prime, I recommend the movie "Aeronauts", based on the true story of James Glaisher. He was a pioneering meteorologist in the 1860's. He went up in a balloon and measured parts of the atmosphere. Pretty good movie, some thrilling moments of course for hollywood.

I saw it as well and although it is entertaining - I would not recommend it. The events portrayed are actually based in reality however Hollywood in all of its infinite wisdom, decided to insert a fictional female lead in place of an actual guy who actually did risk his life to save James Glaisher. There are countless females throughout history that have done heroic things worth remembering - to discount the self sacrifice of an actual historic figure in order to conjure a convenient fictional portrayal is both lazy and patronizing. Just my .02.

Mid 30s and rain Friday will be enjoyable. The 850mb low just came south a decent bit from the 18z GFS run. Way to early to iron out the details. Though, rain is a good bet, but this looks more complex to me. Freezing rain to rain to sleet/snow could be another possible outcome.

Will be interesting to see the battle between the retreating high and the WAA. I have my money on Milwaukee getting hammered, but wouldn’t be surprised if models struggle with surface temps until we are within 48 hours.

Seen this on Twitter. What’s the thinking with this? Comparison of the 850mb layer to last year. Low level cold air in a far more advantageous location for tapping if and when the stream flows adjust to permit a significant system to make use thereof. This is what the poster said in correlation to the pic.

Will be interesting to watch that unfold. I hate ice but if there’s nothing going on I’ll take it over rain.
Regardless, last thing we need is another 2-3” of rain.

Reading some post saying bring on the ice... may sand fleas attack your crotch and your arms to short to scratch! Ice out here in rural USA is a BIG deal!
