Don't mean to point on you Chris - my apologies - You are correct the roads here in St Chuck were completely untreated.... No.. no... no... please dont say sorry for speaking up. i really appreciate that you did. If my forecast or messaging was off...or wasn't received the way I expected/thought it was.. I need to hear that. Sometimes I can get caught inside my own head and what I think I am saying is not what is being heard (does that even make sense?) There is no question roads got worse than messaged. My contention is that it had less to do with the forecast...and more to do with how roads were handled. That is one reason I try hard to stay away from explicitly forecasting road conditions...because while I can predict the weather pretty well... I have no way to understand how roads are going to be treated. I can tell you what will fall on a road...and what may happen if they are not treated...but how street crews will respond is often a mystery. Tks Chris - forecast was spot on for several days - Street crews were asleep - There was an assumption by me the the street crews were listening...

364 from Mid Rivers all the way to 64 was a joke and that is all MODOT. It was a solid sheet of ice and people couldn’t make it up hills and with curves, couldn’t handle the curves, even at 10mph. I’m sorry, no excuses. They didn’t prepare properly. Why the heck were they not throwing salt all over the place this afternoon knowing how fast temps were dropping and that the snow wouldnt end until sunset? And most of the 2 or so inches of snow fell this morning!!! Maybe we had another 1/4 to 1/2 this afternoon? Argh...Im just waiting to throw the forecasters under the bus. EXACTLY my frustration....I think they underestimated how quickly the temps were dropping with the burst of freezing sleet/snow right at rush hour...

So my wife is wondering: with temperatures as low as they are tonight, what will roads look like tomorrow? Thoughts?

The doggo encountered her first real snow. Didn't like it, until she realized she can eat it. Now she wants to keep going out for a snack.

I left work at 5:45. Page was snow-packed. 170N to 70 had some clear spots, but a lot of spots with just open tracks. 70E was a little better, but I got behind one MODOT truck and he had the blade down--no salt (in his defense, maybe he was out). I crossed the Stan Span in to Illinois and it was like the Red Sea parted. All lanes of 64 were clear. All lanes of 255 were clear. The on and off ramps were clear. Even 15/13 was in pretty good shape until somewhere between Belleville and Freeburg. I saw IDOT trucks throwing salt, maybe even on cleared roads so they wouldn't refreeze. Maybe circumstances were different, but maybe IDOT just deserves a big attaboy. It snowed 2" in 6+ HOURS and MODOT couldn't keep up? C'mon...

3" in Belleville. 3.5-4"around 16-18th and Cole/Martin Luther King Dr. I don't recall anyone forecasting a blitzkrieg of blinding heavy snow. I was in downtown STL between 1040-11:46. The secondary roads were already accumulating snow. By the time I left to come back to Illinois 2" was already accumulating by Union Station. THAT'S 2"IN ONE HOUR. ONE FREAKING HOUR. STRAIGHT WHITE OUT CONDITIONS FOR 45 MINS WITH 20-30 MPH WIND GUSTS. I SAW TWO CARS SLIDE DOWN OLIVE AT 17TH AROUND 11:10AM WHEN BLINDINGLY HEAVY SNOW AND 20-30MPH WIND GUSTS WERE BRINGING THINGS ON THE GROUND TO A STANDSTILL. OLIVE WAS SNOW COVERED THEN EXCEPT THE VERY CENTER AWAY FROM STRUCTURES. AT 12:30 I REACHED SWANSEA, IL AND ABOUT 3/4" HAD FALLEN WITH SLEET/GRAUPEL AND LARGE FLAKES PICKING UP. AGAIN PARKING LOTS AND SECONDARY ROADS WERE ALREADY SLUSHLY AND GETTING SLICK. WINDS WERE PUMMELING. BY 3PM 2"+ HAD FALLEN AND SECONDARY ROADS WERE ICING OVER. BY 4PM BELLEVILLE WAS CLOSING IN ON 3" AND PARKING LOTS AND SECONDARY ROADS WERE ICED OVER. NOT SLUSHED. NOT EVENING SLUSH. ICED OVER. FROZEN SOLID.... WITH 3"+ OF SNOW, ICED OVER ROADS WITH SNOW, SIDE WALKS WERE ICE AND SNOW LODGED. WINDS WERE RUNNING 20MPH SUSTAINED ALL DAY. GUSTS REACHING 35MPH. I WORKED OUTSIDE IN BLIZZARD CONDITIONS TODAY!!! Here is my STREET: ITS BEEN LIKE THIS SINCE 230PM. Man sometimes it feels like some forecasters and hobbyists in this community need to actually get outside and get into the trenches where us "poor" "common" folk work, live, and play. WE HAD A BLIZZARD IN ST LOUIS TODAY WITH 2" OF SNOW IN 45 MINUTES. WHO FORECASTED THAT? I REALIZE THAT I CAN'T ASK THAT TO BE PROPERLY FORECASTED WHEN IT WAS ISOLATED. BUT I WAS THERE, IT HAPPENED.

IDOT would constantly talk to our forecasters and we gave them actual pavement temperature forecast- while for MoDOT, we didn’t do any pavement forecast for them. We had to fill out these lengthy worded forecast formatted specifically for them which were rather useless from an operational standpoint. The only time they would call us is to say “we didn’t follow the form correctly “

Did anyone just see the shooting star? Shot East to West direction, directly over Shrewsbury. I was outside shooting a video but missed it! It was very bright, can’t believe I saw it with all the light pollution that surrounds me.

If that was a meteor it had to be pretty decent size. Shook the whole county apparently

What I am now hearing is that MDOT could not lay salt down due to this starting as rain. Once the snow, ice and flash freeze hit it was over...
