The sun has returned to the metro with clearing skies. And it warmed up a bit, too. With the house open as damp as it was this morning it was almost a touch cool

Chris mentioned this forum on Facebook. It made me wonder...should there be an open enrollment period to allow more people to join?

Chris mentioned this forum on Facebook. It made me wonder...should there be an open enrollment period to allow more people to join? I have thought about that... but then I quickly remember what a pain it was to maintain order when we operated in "the wild wild west" when anyone could join. I think it is best...to maintain the integrity of the group and the information that is shared...to keep it closed. I will continue to entertain...and pretty much accept new members if they email me directly or are recommended by an existing member.

There is a reason you have several moderators. We’re better as a limited group

Looks like instead of a nice cool weekend next weekend which it looked like a couple of days ago, it now appears to be hot. Again.

It does appear to me there could be some severe weather threat Tuesday with dewpoints perhaps in the mid to upper 60s ahead of the front and some decent mid-level flow developing. However, I'm not sure yet sure how far northwestward that threat will begin. 12z NAM/GFS shows a surface convergence zone, more of prefrontal trough, very roughly in the vicinity of the I-44 in MO and I-55 in IL at 21z (4pm). Some of the convection showing up on the GFS in these areas in the afternoon could be severe with something like 35-40kts of 6km shear and maybe 1500+j/kg of CAPE. But the NAM delays convection till the main theta-e front and sharper wind shift zone arrives in the early evening hours - which I don't completely buy. I haven't seen the ECMWF and UKMET yet and I hate to commit to anything three days out, especially regarding the timing of the front, but right now I'm thinking areas northwest of I-44 fall more into the marginal risk category while areas to the southeast stand a bit better chance, albeit still slight, for severe storms on Tuesday. In any case shear is quite unidirectional so storms would not rotate easily and would tend to pose mainly a wind threat like Todd already pointed out.

Sub-tropical cyclone Leslie out in the Atlantic may be interesting if only because it may transition to fully tropical prior to transitioning to extra-tropical (due to baroclinic influences of an approaching shortwave), then back to sub-tropical, then to fully tropical again, and perhaps finally extra-tropical as it lifts out into the North Atlantic many days later. All that without moving too much and basically just meandering in the middle of the Atlantic. Though it may or may not get a name change somewhere in there if all that plays out (not sure about the NHC practice on this?). Here's the CMC ensembles just because they're the most amusing...
