Live coverage of the jonesboro storm-- @brtn was spot on. Went from a small funnel to a life-threatening tornado within 60 seconds. They likely saved lives today..... just shows how important you Mets are to our communities

That's honestly not terrible...definitely a bust for MO and S IL though. Timmer posted a good re-analysis of yesterday's setup earlier and the two clusters of tornadic storms seemed closely associated with the LER and RER of the jetstreak and the associated enhanced LLJ cores. We happened to be inbetween those regions...and the persistent cloud deck kept instability lower than forecast.

Well other than the one tornadic rpt in sw IA, every rpt looks like it was in an outlook delineated area of marginal or above. All in all looks pretty good. It does look like IA had more tornadic rpts than n IL where the mdt risk was delineated but i dont think that much shld be read into that. Perhaps in Eastern OH into western PA they got more severe rpts than a marginal outlook may suggest, this really goes to show the viligance needed with any outlook. I think dividing the areas between N Il and the OH valley wld not hv been advisable with the dryline. I consider this outlook pretty much fully verified.

The moderate risk and associated PDS watch busted pretty bad yesterday IMO. An enhanced risk for central IL and non PDS watch would of been more than adequate yesterday

That was a bad SPC forecast. There are like no storm reports in the giant enhanced risk and they update these outlooks practically until it’s happening.
Better luck next time

When i start to think that an spc guidance has gone bad is when i see a large number of storm reports outside a delineated area. I dont see that here. Im not a fan of the scale (slight, enhanced, etc), so i dont read too much into those. I dont know how these outlooks are used operationally, but it seems like every outbreak was watched, and warned. As a met, yes, always do a postmortem on these kinds of things and outline new requirements for data next time. But im not a met, and the rationale for the outlook has always made sense. Take away the state boundaries, and you do see storm reports were within and followed the general size of the delineation. When you get into the "well nothing happened imby", that so many general populations do, credibility does suffer, but as long as these false positives diminish over time, the public shld be ok. I know that im happy we didnt get anything.

It was looking like a cool first half of April. But just like the models did all winter they have now flipped and look warm

It was looking like a cool first half of April. But just like the models did all winter they have now flipped and look warm Yeah, it looked like we were heading towards a -NAO/-EPO but the -NAO becomes strongly west-based with the hugely anomalous ridge building west of Hudson Bay. That forces the cold air to dump into the W US which pumps up the ridging across the E US after the cut-off low finally moves offshore late this week. So it's looking substantially warmer than it was through early April for sure.

Taking timeout to ask your prayers for Matt Chambers over at KMOV... and his family. His dad just passed away (not COVID related) and I can only imagine how rough that is given our current situation. Matt is a great guy with a big heart and I'm sure he could use your thoughts and prayers.

Matt is a great guy with a big heart and I'm sure he could use your thoughts and prayers. We had a funeral in the family last week. One of the strangest things I've been a part of. There were a handful of us at the funeral home, no hand shaking, hugging, etc. Then a brief service at the cemetery...and then we went home. No meal, no gathering. Planning on a "celebration of life" type event later. We're lucky enough that we live in a small town and they waived the 8-person limit, or whatever it was supposed to be. I think we had 12.
